Magnetic disk

  • Any storage medium that utilizes magnetic patterns to represent information is considered magnetic media. Good examples of a magnetic media and magnetic storage is a tape drive, floppy diskette, and hard drive.

  • Any storage medium that utilizes magnetic patterns to represent information

  • It is considered an analog solution, in contrast to more recent types of storage media, such as solid state disk (SSD) drives.

  • Magnetic storage is the manipulation of magnetic fields on a medium in order to record audio, video or other data.

  • These technologies have taken us from capacities of kilobytes to numerous terabytes and bytes per second to 100+ MB per second.

Hard drive

A computer hard drive (or a hard disk or HDD) is one kind of technology that stores the operating system, applications, and data files such a documents, pictures and music that your computer uses. The rest of the components in your computer work together to show you the applications and files stored on your hard drive.

‌Non-volatile means data is retained when the computer is turned off.

‌It is a secondary storage device used to store data permanently, random access memory (RAM) being the primary memory device.

Work

A hard disk drive (HDD) is composed of a platter that contains compartments to hold data. This data is your operating system, applications, and any files you have created. There is also an accuator arm that moves across the platter to read or write the information requested. To make this process faster, the platter spins as the accuator arm moves across it...

Optical media

Optical media refers to any data storage device or equipment that uses optical data storage and retrieval techniques to read and write data. It stores data digitally on a media device and uses a laser to read data from it.

Optical media is also known as optical storage.

Media, in the computer world, refers to various types of data storage. For example, hard drives, CDs, DVDs, and USB drives are all different types of media.

Benifits of optical media

  • ‌Cost

  • ‌Duration

  • ‌Simplicity.

  • ‌Portability.

  • ‌Stability.

  • ‌Security.

  • ‌Capacity.

  • ‌Reliability.

Distributed multimedia

If the multimedia systems are supported by multiuser system, then we call those multimedia systems as distributed multimedia systems.

A multi user system designed to support multimedia applications for a large number of users consists of a number of system components. A typical multimedia application environment consists of the following components:

1.     Application software.

2.     Container object store.

3.     Image and still video store.

4.     Audio and video component store.

5.     Object directory service agent.

6.     component service agent.

7.     User interface and service agent.

8.     Networks (LAN and WAN).

AVI File Format

‌AVI stand for Audio Video Interleaved.

‌An AVI file uses less compression to store files and takes up more space than many other video formats—like MPEG and MOV.

‌AVI files also can be created without the use of compression at all.

‌This makes the files lossless, which results in immensely larger file sizes — approximately 2-3 GB per minute of video.

‌AVI files (which end with an .avi extension) require a special player that may be included with your Web browser or may require downloading.

Advantages of AVI Files:

1. To store DVD’s and Disk’s you can easily create them into AVI file format.

2. The AVI file format has a very good quality of audio fidelity

3. Advertisements, promos, short movies usually resort to AVI file formats because of its higher compression capacity.

4. It does not require a specific hardware device or software application for the file to run.

5. Since the availability of a lot of codecs, it is very easy to attain the required compression ratio of AVI format.

Disadvantages of AVI Files:

1. Compressing AVI files beyond a certain degree can result in bad quality or loss of quality of the video.

2. If you want to retrieve and play the file you will have to utilize the same codec you used then you will need the same codec to be installed on the system.

3. AVI files can be very large file formats if you do not compress them.

Video compression techniques

Video compression technology is a set of techniques for reducing and removing redundancy in video data.

Video compression is the process of encoding a video file in such a way that it consumes less space than the original file and is easier to transmit over the network/Internet.

There are two types of video compression: lossless compression and lossy compression

‌Lossless compression

As the name suggests, lossless compression compresses the video file with no loss of information or quality (visual image or audio) whatsoever.

‌Lossy compression

Lossy compression is the traditional and most commonly used type of compression for reducing file size.

Multimedia object servers

‌The Media Object Server (MOS) protocol allows newsroom computer systems (NCS) to communicate using a standard protocol with video servers, audio servers, still stores, and character generators for broadcast production.

‌This allows the NCS to control the sequence that media objects are played or presented by the MOS.

Types of multimedia server:-

  • ‌ Server Platform.

  • ‌ Application Server.

  • ‌ Audio/Video Server.

  • ‌ Chat Server.

  • ‌ Fax Server.

  •  ‌FTP Server.

  • ‌ Groupware Server.

  • ‌ IRC Server.
